A special exhibition, “TIMELESS,” is currently on view at ISSEY MIYAKE GINZA | CUBE and ISSEY MIYAKE KYOTO KURA.
The origins of the HaaT series made in India, “HaaTH”, lie in ASHA BY MDS, which was launched in 1984. Made in collaboration with a workshop based in Ahmedabad, India, “HaaTH” presented clothing that was both luxurious and comfortable, made through a process of clothes-making that utilised local natural materials and delicate traditional techniques.
The craftsmanship spirit of ASHA BY MDS was then passed on to HaaT, which was launched in 2000. The company continues its journey as HaaT H, combining India's outstanding craftsmanship with modern sensibilities.
This exhibition will feature a selection of impressive photographs by photographer Tomio Seike from the 1988 visual book "ASHA BY MDS," which was given to us by Shigeko Naruse, who was the art director at the time. In addition, a new video was shot in the studio to coincide with the exhibition.
It documents the skill and time involved in the craftspeople’s handiwork, as well as the thought processes behind their repeated actions.
The workshop covers a land area of 50,000 square meters, including its garden. Surrounded by greenery, the space is adorned with blooming flowers and the sounds of chirping birds. Peacocks and monkeys also inhabit this naturally rich and tranquil environment.
