The SHIKAKU at ISSEY MIYAKE SHINJUKU presents a special exhibition, “SHADOW STUDY” by ISSEY MIYAKE.

SHADOW STUDY is a print series based on a photography study of shadows found in everyday life, shot on black and white film. This study uses a technique called “double exposure”, in which the film is photographed once and then deliberately exposed again, exploring blurred and abstract forms in the overlap and blending of light and shadow.

This exhibition presents the original 36 photographs of the study, printed onWashi (traditional Japanese paper) from the roll of film that has been digitalized to reveal the behind-the-scenes process of the creation.

Laid out on a light table wrapped in washi, the photographs, with a dim glow from below, capture the interplay of light and shadow as they represent the ephemeral natural phenomena overlapping each other, reflecting the theme of the collection—the ordinary, everyday moments can be seen in different ways by changing one’s perspective.
