CURVINESS SHIRT

“Jar” is a work created by ceramic artist Shoji Kamoda in 1978. Inspired by the sight of this piece, the desire to wear a shirt with a striped pattern like this jar served as the starting point for the textile. The thin lines containing shades of blue, white, ochre, and grey wrap continuously around the curved surface of the jar, and the grooves carved at the edges of the glazes make each of them stand out strongly, creating a rhythm that is quiet yet has a sense of tension. To reimagine this feeling with cloth, yarn-dyed stripes are woven as a base layer, and the wavering and blurring of the lines seen on the jar are recreated individually by hand and layered with printing. These are not homogenous stripes, the overlapping lines with slight deviations and blurring create an uneven look with depth. The garment’s structure is also guided by the jar’s volume and curved surface, utilising a design that has a flat pattern yet reconstructs the jar as a three-dimensional form that wraps around the body.
