08.05.2026 | CORPORATE ISSEY MIYAKE / NEW YORK Opening on Friday, 8 May, 2026
On Friday, 8 May, 2026, ISSEY MIYAKE opened its new flagship store at 45 Madison Avenue in New York City.

Located on the ground floor of the iconic Cass Gilbert-designed New York Life Building, at the corner of Madison Avenue and 26th Street overlooking Madison Square Park, the new flagship spans 13,000 square feet of retail space. Designed by New York-based architecture firm, Solid Objectives Idenburg Liu, the store reflects a thoughtful dialogue between innovation, craftsmanship and architectural heritage.

The two-level interior is defined by advanced engineering and meticulous attention to detail. At its center stands a monumental, transparent staircase, constructed from large-format structural glass designed and fabricated with exceptional precision. Elements of the building’s original historic Beaux-Arts structure have been intentionally exposed and complemented by new custom aluminium and stainless-steel surfaces and fixtures, creating an elegant balance between industrial rawness and contemporary refinement. Expansive windows along three sides of the store invite natural light and connect the interior to the vibrancy of Madison Square Park and the surrounding architectural landscape.
A titanium panel is displayed within the space, a symbol of the enduring friendship between the late Frank Gehry and Issey Miyake. In a continued commitment to material circularity, glass wall panels from the recently closed Tribeca flagship have been transformed into tables for accessories and folded items.

At the rear of the store, a dedicated gallery space named MADO will host rotating exhibitions, brand collaborations, and special projects throughout the year. As the first gallery space within an ISSEY MIYAKE store outside of Japan, MADO — which means “window” in Japanese — serves as an overseas platform for sharing the brand’s craftsmanship and cultural values. This intimate exhibition area is designed to foster deeper connections between the retail environment, ISSEY MIYAKE’s philosophy, and the global, dynamic art and design community.

To celebrate the opening, a selection of exclusive items will be available only at the Madison Avenue flagship. The lineup will include FOLDING COAT, a limited edition coat, each with a hand-pressed Rakkan¹ of ISSEY MIYAKE, THE UNBOUND HAT, handmade using abaca fiber, and SHADE AND SHADED_NY, a pleated series consisting of two dresses, a skirt and a top, created especially for this occasion.

A special campaign launching in conjunction with the opening features the exclusive SHADE AND SHADED_NY dress and FOLDING COAT, alongside iconic New York fixtures such as an apple, a martini, and a yellow taxi. The imagery offers a playful welcome as ISSEY MIYAKE introduces its new flagship to the city.
1 Rakkan refers to the signature and/or seal applied to the artwork by the artist to mark its completion, typically found on traditional Japanese paintings and calligraphy. The seal is traditionally hand-pressed using a specific red paste.
